I am a huge fan of breakfast. In fact, I’d dare say it’s my favorite meal. If you follow me on Pinterest, you’ve probably seen me pinning to my ‘Breakfast Is My Favorite Meal‘ or ‘Healthy Way To Start The Day‘ boards. I’m always in search of a great french toast recipe. Narrowing down my favorite breakfast would be tough, but a good french toast recipe will almost always be found at the top of my list. What’s your favorite? In addition to loving breakfast I also LOVE lemon! Love, love, LOVE it!! In thinking of a great quick and easy breakfast recipe the idea of lemon paired with french toast won me over right away.
The best part about it is, you can make a lot of breakfast all at once or you can make breakfast for one with this french toast recipe. All you need to do is just use as much bread as you think you’ll eat. Plan for the whole loaf, this will get eaten up immediately!

If you love lemon, you'll love this Lemon French Toast recipe! It's a slightly citrusy twist of a popular breakfast staple.
Ingredients
- 2eggs
- 1/4c.fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 1/2c.almond milkor milk of choice
- 1loaf challah breadsliced to desired thickness
- butter
Instructions
Mix, milk, lemon juice, and eggs until well blended.
Dip each piece of bread into the egg batter and coat both sides.
Heat skillet to medium, place 1 tablespoon butter in pan (or spray with cooking spray) and place bread into pan and cook on each side until lightly crisp.
Spread butter on top of each slice, drizzle with your favorite syrup and dust with powdered sugar.
Recipe Notes
Of course you don't have to use challah bread, it just happened to be the tastiest looking thing at the bakery when I went. Typically we only have wheat bread on hand, so I would generally use that. Use whatever bread you'd like. This challah however is my favorite!

February 16, 2021 at 7:43 pmThis was fantastic. My 6 year old daughter wanted a lemony dinner and was asking me to just squeeze lemon on whole wheat sandwich bread :D We ended up finding this recipe and I was thrilled because it didn’t require adding a bunch of sugar. Since we were having this for dinner I made a few modifications but overall we stuck to your recipe. Definitely think this made for a better dinner than PB&J with lemon juice would’ve.

Angela SandelMay 13, 2019 at 2:17 pm Can you squeeze fresh lemon juice over the toast instead of mixing with the milk? That is the way we do the German Pancakes but wasn’t sure with the egg coating.

April 23, 2019 at 8:28 pmI use an old family fave pikelet recipe which includes ‘a few drops of lemon in milk’ and as it is not dissimilar in being a sort of batter mix, I’m sure it works just as well with this French Toast recipe, which I look forward to trying. Can someone tell me the diff between challah (sp?) bread and other bread? Is it like sourdough perhaps? I’ve not heard this term before.

May 22, 2014 at 9:04 amWouldn’t this just result in curdled milk? Adding lemon juice to milk is how I make buttermilk for recipes.

May 24, 2014 at 12:00 pmYou are correct in that’s the way to make buttermilk.. I’m wondering if since I used almond milk that’s why it didn’t curdle for me. With lemon juice and regular milk.. I believe you have to let it sit for it to turn in to buttermilk – so as long as you don’t let it sit it should work?? I LOVED this with the almond milk. Worked great for me! Hopefully it can work great for you too!
