Jennifer entered the world on the island of Kauai, embodying the welcoming Aloha Spirit, and lived her life with cheerfulness and generosity. Two lines from an Adam Lindsay Gordon poem best describe her:Kindness in another's troublesCourage in one's own. She was an exceptional educator who taught in Las Vegas for decades, loved by her fellow teachers and students, and all her family and friends alike. Dearest to her were her husband Patrick, her daughter Kim, sister Lil and niece Tasha. The light of the world has dimmed with her passing. Heaven's radiance has increased with her arrival. Much love, aloha and mahalo.

<![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: Obituaries]]> (9)

TED EBENKAMP Theodore Lawrence Ebenkamp (Ted), 84, died peacefully in his sleep at home in Las Vegas during the early morning hours of May 30 from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Lynne, three daughters, Becky, Barrie, and Bonnie, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Ted was a quiet man who worked hard to be successful. He rose from a poor background to become a U.S. champion athlete, graduate of USC's School of Pharmacy, MBA holder (Pepperdine University), radio-pharmacist at L.A. County Medical Center, shrewd real estate investor, passionate member of his community, and holder of several local offices, all unpaid. He was humble, and many of his colleagues were unaware of his accomplishments. He was born on Halloween day in St. Leo, Kansas, to parents Madeline and Edward in 1939 and was preceded by two siblings, brother Jerome and sister Patricia. The family lived in nearby Cunningham. Edward was a traveling salesman, a soldier stationed at military bases, and later a heavy-duty mechanic, making Madeline something of a single parent. At one point, he broke his back in an accident and couldn't work for a year. The family got by on the kindness of Midwestern neighbors who made sure they didn't fall between the cracks. When Ted was a toddler, his family did what so many other poor Midwesterners did: They packed their misfortunes into a vehicle and headed West to find a better life. And like the fictitious Joads and many real-life families learned, California wasn't entirely Golden. The first stop was a desert camp in Inyokern where Edward found construction work and the family lived in a small trailer. A year later, they settled into a modest house in Compton. As a boy, Ted became obsessed with sports, so much so that he requested a plum tree in the backyard be razed to accommodate a personal basketball court. When this wish was denied, he swore off prunes for life. Basketball, however, prevailed, and he played on the Varsity team at Compton High. But he was even better at badminton: At 17, Ted became the top ranked youth player in the country. Sometimes he hitchhiked across America to play in tournaments. Ted didn't have a career in mind as college loomed. His brother Jerry suggested he follow his lead and study to become a pharmacist. He enrolled at USC and rented a cramped apartment with pals Neil Whittredge (accounting) and Kyle Brown (law) who remained lifelong friends. He also remained close with fellow pharmacy students Tom Marumoto and George Furuta. He spoke to Tom several times in the days before his death. Ted graduated from the USC School of Pharmacy in 1964. While at USC, Ted took a student pharmacist job at a drugstore called Gage's in North Long Beach. While there, he met co-worker Lynne—a student nurse—and they began dating. They became engaged and married in 1963. Shortly thereafter, they bought a home in the Hollydale area of South Gate, and a family soon followed. After graduation, Ted took a pharmacist position at Mabry Drug in Hollydale. Soon, he became the owner's partner, but left a few years later for want of other goals. He became interested in real estate and sought an MBA degree at Pepperdine University. During this time, he took a clinical pharmacy position at the LA County Hospital campus. But the university at USC wasn't done with him: A professor thought Ted would be an excellent addition to the school's first radio-pharmaceutical training program. After finishing the program, Ted was able to include a radio pharmacy module in the pharmacy school rotation, became a professor, and taught pharmacy students. He remained at LA County Medical Center (USC) for more than 25 years as a radio-pharmacist preparing and administering nuclear medicines to patients with cancer and other serious diseases. The family moved to Rowland Heights in 1970, and during this time Ted coached his three young girls' softball teams. He retired from USC in 1996 at age 57 and shifted his energies to civic duty. He joined the Rowland Heights Community Coordinating Council as treasurer, then served as president for eight years. In this role, he successfully lobbied to build the Rowland Heights Community Center, led a movement to stop a large apartment complex development, and opened channels of communication between the town (an unincorporated area) and L.A. County. He was elected to the Walnut Valley Water Board in 2007 and served as president five times until 2020. During his service, Ted was selected by L.A. County as Water Commissioner and received recognition from the U.S. Congress, California State Senate, State Assembly, and L.A. County for outstanding community service. Ted enjoyed staying fit and eating healthy. He walked three miles a day well into his 80s and avoided sugar. Regarding travel, the couple weren't interested in foreign locales—they regularly retreated to their San Diego timeshare. They broke that rule once when they ventured on a once-in-a-lifetime multi-week trip to New Zealand. Ted raved about its breathtaking beauty and recommended his kids visit, too. They also enjoyed Hawaii. After spending the majority of their lives in Southern California, Ted and Lynne Ebenkamp moved to Las Vegas in 2021 and joined Solera, a 55-and-older community. No funeral is planned—instead the family will hold a celebration of life in the Fall. In lieu of flowers, Ted requested donations be made to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Anyone who wishes to share photos or anecdotes is encouraged to submit them to his family at: Tedebenkampmemoryphotos@gmail.com USC FIGHT ON!

<![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: Obituaries]]> (12)

GLORIA EVA SAUCIER(1924 – 2024)Gloria Eva Saucier (née West), 100, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, June 12, 2024 in her Las Vegas home. Born May 12, 1924 in Roselle Park, NJ, to Arthur and Rosemary West, she had one older sibling, Robert West, Sr. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and her husband. Her only child, Robert Saucier survives her. Additionally, her surviving extended family includes step-daughter Bonnie Saucier, granddaughter Michelle Richards, granddaughter Alixandra Saucier, grandson Kent Saucier and several great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. Having been born during the Great Depression, she adopted a sense of frugality. However, Gloria still managed to reach out and live life to its fullest. She was proud of the fact that at age 16, she had her pilot's license before her driver's license. During and subsequent to World War II, Gloria served her country with pride as a soldier in the United States Marine Corp. Semper Fi was in her DNA. Gloria attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. One of the highlights of her life was Gloria's stent as an airline stewardess for TWA Airlines. The modern aircraft of the day was the DC-3 and she loved to lament how in those days all passengers dressed up for the honor to fly. Her passengers included much of the famous Hollywood set of the day. Howard Hughes was a regular. After marrying the love of her life, Benjamin Saucier in Las Vegas, the couple lived in the Los Angeles area, Reno, Spokane and finally Las Vegas. Gloria was known as many things. To some she was the "Cookie Lady" because she would bake her homemade cookies for almost everyone she knew, including for her neighbors, her doctors, the mailman, and even the trash collectors. To others she was the one with all the good stories, the Yorkie lover or the airplane fanatic. Her generosity was at the core of her character, you wouldn't be able to leave her house or a dinner table without being offered something from her home, yard or plate. Into her 90s, Gloria remained active. She was selected to fly to Washington, D.C. as part of the prestigious "Honor Flight" for American Veterans where she placed a flower reef on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. At 95, Gloria was honored to throw the first pitch at a Las Vegas Aviators game. At 97, she flew in an open co*ckpit Stearman biplane over Nevada. In honoring Gloria's wishes, her family will hold services at the Desert Spring Methodist Church on Saturday, July 13, 2024. A reception is planned following the services. <![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: Obituaries]]> (21)

DANIEL GONZALESDaniel Gonzales (Danny) joined our Heavenly Father May 30, 2024, at the age of 83. Danny was born November 23, 1940, to Teodeo and Maria Gonzales in Sloan, NV. He was a lifelong resident of Southern Nevada. He attended grammar school in Sloan and high school in Las Vegas. In his youth, Danny's passions were playing baseball, boxing, anything to do with automobiles, and spending time with his family and friends. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 in 1958. He spent most of his service on the Pacific Island of Guam, which was a training post for U.S. armed services after the Korean War at the onset of the Vietnam War. Danny's training and experience in Guam was a great source of many amazing memories and stories that he shared very proudly with friends and family over the years. After leaving the Navy in 1962, he returned to Las Vegas to begin his civilian life again. Danny met Donna Drosdahl in 1964, and in 1966 they got married and started a family of their own. They had four children: Danny, Dawna, Gary, and Michael. They spent some of the best years of their lives growing up in the southwestern boom town. He loved to fix things his entire life. Danny would often say "why ask someone to do it for you, when you know how to do it yourself". He began what would be a 34-year career working at the Nevada Test Site in 1963, working as a paramedic and later as an environmental specialist. In 1998, Danny worked at Standard Wholesale and Supply Company, retiring in 2006. Danny was one of eleven children. He was preceded in death by his brothers Alfonso and Paul. He is survived by his four children, Danny, Dawna, Gary and Michael; grandchildren, Joshua, S, Matthew, Lauren, and Lindsay; brothers, Raymond (Kay), Richard, David (Marcella), Gabriel; and sisters, Rita, Juanita (Suzanne), Pauline, and Teresa (Joseph). He was preceded in death by his dear friend James Lyman and survived by his best friend Rhea, her son Timothy (Patti), and his Godchildren Timothy and Valerie. Danny believed in Jesus Christ and had strong faith in God's goodness. He will be deeply missed and remembered well, and his name and memory will remain in the hearts and minds of the people he loved. Danny will be remembered most for always being available to help a loved one. Services will be at 2pm Tue. July 2, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veteran's Memorial Dr., Boulder City, NV 89005.

JACOB BERNARD "JACK" BETOFFSKYJacob Bernard "Jack" Betoffsky, age 97, was born on May 3, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA to Tillie (nee Bobis) and Reuben B. Betoffsky and passed away on June 8, 2024 in Las Vegas. Jack came from an industrious Jewish family that was in the restaurant and bar business. With the exception of his military service in the US Navy, ending in February 1946, he remained in the restaurant and bar business his entire life. After many successful years in the Philadelphia area, he moved to the Miami, FL area with his wife and parents, who were relocating for health reasons. After his parents passed away, he embarked on a very successful career where he would acquire locations that were suitable for the operation of a restaurant and bar. Upon acquiring a location, he would build it out to accommodate a large-scale restaurant (typically 400 or more guests); a co*cktail lounge; and a package liquor sales outlet. At some point, after the business was running smoothly, he would sell it and move on to another similar acquisition, then repeat the process. In 2009, he retired and moved to Las Vegas, purchased a townhome in Sunrise Villas, where he spent many satisfying years enjoying the fruits of his labor. When questioned how he managed to live such a long and productive live, the answer was always the same, "conservative values, thrifty habits, and common sense." Jack was always cognizant of and generous to people in need; organizations that supported youth; military veterans; and conservative agendas. Services are private. Anyone sharing Jack's values and concerns are encouraged to donate to the type of organizations mentioned above or a Jewish organization of your choice. King David Memorial Chapel handled the arrangements.?

<![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: Obituaries]]> (38)

JOYCE SCHNEIDERJoyce Schneider, 81 of Henderson, NV passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024. An educator, community philanthropist and motivational speaker, Joyce made every day of her life count. Growing up in Crofton, a rural Nebraska town along the Missouri River, she lived on her family farm and went to a one-room schoolhouse. After high school, she knew she wanted to become a teacher. Upon graduating with a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Wayne State College, she attended the University of Colorado and Northern Arizona University achieving her master's degree. Joyce also obtained her administrator license, but chose to stay where her passion was, in the classroom where she could inspire and make a difference in children's lives. She was blessed with a natural gift for education and seeing the best in children. Joyce taught for more than 40 years, beginning her teaching career in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1967 she packed up her red Pontiac and did the solo drive to Las Vegas beginning her education career for the Clark County School District teaching 3rd grade at Rex Bell, Lewis E. Rowe and opening Estes McDoniel and Vanderburg Elementary Schools. Early in her career, she was asked to co-develop the UNLV student teaching program. Through the years she taught student teachers how to be the best for their students. YES, I CAN! was proudly displayed at the front of the classroom and became the class slogan. Over many years, she had former students stop and tell her how those words rang true throughout their lives and how they lived by that motto daily. Stepping away from the classroom in 2004, she refocused and put her love for children and education into the community. Joyce was a member of the Josh Stevens Foundation and was Board President of the UNLV College of Education for many years. Another passion of hers was the Discovery Children's Museum. As a trustee board member for more than 20 years, she was named a "Friend of Kids" award recipient. Bringing education and excitement for learning together were her passions and the Discovery Children's Museum was where she shined brightly. As a community philanthropist, she was asked by schools, non-profit organizations and businesses to share her enthusiasm through motivational speaking. She loved bringing people together and sharing how each person was special to her and others. Joyce, a mentor to many and loved by all, demonstrated her positive attitude and love for life. Every day she would ask people what they were celebrating, because she believed each day was a chance to bring joy. Joyce is survived by her husband Stephen Schneider, daughter Mollie Schneider-Halvorsen (Ryan), son Marc (Kristin) and her five beloved grandchildren (Ziya, True, Eila, Garin and Dallyn). A memorial mass will be celebrated at St Francis of Assisi in Henderson on Friday, June 14th at 10:30 a.m. A Celebration of Life will be at the Schneider residence beginning at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Joyce's honor to Discovery Children's Museum. Find Joy in Everyday – just like Joyce!

CYNTHIA ZEIDNERCynthia Zeidner, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 due to complications surrounding a fall in her home. She departed this life surrounded by loved ones, and her loss is unexpected, leaving those who knew her profoundly saddened. Cynthia was born on December 2nd, 1938, and was raised as part of a close family. She had a way of endearing herself to people, and usually had pleasant stories or anecdotes to tell, of her father and of cousins in her life, even from a young age. She led a remarkable and interesting life, including some travel, and youth spent with a Kibbutz in Israel. She was an active and practicing member of the Jewish community throughout her life, as well as an Officer in the Daughters of the Nile, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an active member of, and sang in the Adult Choir for Congregation Ner Tamid for many years. She was an outspoken optimist, and loved the people around her. Unafraid to express herself and her beliefs, be they political, religious, or just feelings she had, Cynthia had a large and comforting presence in everything she was a part of. She was a retired civilian employee of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, a job she held dear, regularly sharing stories of her time there, and the generally pleasant, positive interactions she had with the Officers. In her later years, she was a part of a Pub Trivia team, where she nurtured several of her friendships and made many more. She loved her social life, and made sure to keep people involved in her later years, and she made sure to make every occasion she was a part of special. From her colorful discussions at the Passover Seder this year, to the large presence she had at Andrea and Ayo's recent wedding, the void in the lives of her friends and family left behind is not going to be easily filled. She will be sorely missed. A Family and Friends service will be held at King David Memorial Chapel and Cemetery at 1:00 pm on Friday 06/07/2024. 2697 E El Dorado Ln, Las Vegas, NV 89120. She will be traveling to California soon after the service, and will be laid to rest at Mt. Sinai and Memorial park in Los Angeles.

<![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: Obituaries]]> (42)

BETTY BRADSHAW FOLEYBetty Foley woke up every morning singing "Home Means Nevada." Her daily outpouring of love for her state was only surpassed by her love for her family. Betty Bradshaw Foley died on May 30, 2024 at the age of 96. Born in St. George, Utah on June 21, 1927, she was the fifth of seven children of Ruben and Ethel Bradshaw of Elgin, Nevada. Betty's grandfather arrived in Nevada and homesteaded the Elgin Ranch in 1864, the year Nevada became a state. Betty's maternal ancestors developed the polygamist community of Bunkerville, Nevada in 1877, where her great grandfather Dudley Leavitt, boasted five wives and 56 children. Upon earning her teaching certificate at the University of Nevada, Reno, after WWII, Betty returned to Elgin to teach in the Elgin One-Room Schoolhouse, which is now part of the Nevada State Park System. She delighted in sharing family Ranch stories until the end. At the University, she met a dashing veteran, Joe Foley, and embarked on a life of adventure. In 1950, they married at St. Anne Catholic Church in Las Vegas and immediately began their family delivering 9 babies in 10 years at St. Rose de Lima Hospital in Henderson. Her sister, Kathy McDaniel, and her tribe of four were always included in all Foley activities. The family moved to 15th Street in 1955 to be close to St. Anne's and Gorman High School where there were 47 kids on the same street who attended the nearby Catholic schools. Betty was very active in the Service League of Las Vegas, PEO, Pi Beta Phi, Home of the Good Shepherd Auxiliary and the St. Anne PTA. She also participated in a bridge club for more than 50 years which included many of Las Vegas' original matriarchs. There wasn't a soul who didn't adore her. Known for her compassion, love, gourmet cooking and very quick wit, Betty and Joe were boat people and spent most weekends on Lake Mead. They taught all the kids and their friends to water ski. Betty always welcomed extra kids to hang out on the boat or on 15th Street for dinner. She was a mom to so many of her children's friends. She had a fun sassy side, was an unapologetic winner at Spite and Malice card game, and loved to shimmy her shoulders as family and friends sang Patsy Cline songs and "Home Means Nevada." Betty was known for her famous wink or squeeze to let you know she loved you. She is survived by six children: Jeanne Clarke (Will), Helen Foley, Kathleen Meyer (Rex, deceased) Dan Foley (Diana), Patrick Foley (Julie), and Shannon Foley Lyman (Rick), 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Raphael Cohen died on May 31st, 2024 after battling Cancer. He was 70 years old. Rafi was born in Jerusalem, Israel and came to the United States in 1975 after meeting his future wife while she was travelling abroad. He came to the US with an 8th grade education, barely spoke or read English and had $60 in his wallet (in traveller's checks). What Rafi did have, was a strong work ethic and worked as hard as he could in various professions, eventually getting a handle of the English language while on the job. Ultimately, he found his calling in the jewelry industry and opened up his first jewelry store in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1977. He would open up more stores, including Raphael Jewelers in Framingham and on Boylston Street in Boston. In 1994, he decided to move towards the wholesale jewelry industry and became the distributor for several jewelry and wristwatch lines. He even designed and manufactured his own watch lines. In 2003, he moved his life and business to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he continued his wholesale business but also opened up several "TeNo" stores on the Las Vegas strip and, most recently, Raphael Fine Jewelry on Flamingo Rd. Rafi was a huge Arsenal soccer fan, a workaholic, and a lover of good food and smoking weed. He was also a tech nerd, who bought the first commercially available Apple computer as soon as it came out and never stopped. He always needed the newest gadgets as soon as they were released. He understood that the future was "tech" and it was important and needed to be on top of it.He is survived by his life partner (and business partner), Sherri Cohen; his children, David Cohen and Nadine Kluger; his grandchild, Henry Kluger; his brothers, Rami Cohen (and wife Mirav), Sason Cohen and a sister, Leora Malka. Additionally, he leaves to mourn his passing several extended family members and thousands of friends and colleagues around the world. A funeral service will be held at King David Memorial Chapel, 2697 E Eldorado Ln, Las Vegas, NV 89120 on Monday, June 3rd at 10:00am with a burial to follow.A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on 2024-06-03 at King David Memorial Chapel, 2697 E. <![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: Obituaries]]> (47)

HOWARD COHENMay 1, 1944 - April 19, 2024It is with tremendous sorrow that I announce the passing of a true Renaissance man, Howard Cohen, who left us at the age of 79 due to a heart attack. He was a man who did it all, seen it all, and certainly did it his way. He was a tasteful blend of intellectual, creative, and personality traits that always made him the most interesting man in the room. Howard is survived by his wife, Dianna. His love and adoration for her knew no bounds. He never missed a day telling her how beautiful she was and how much he loved her. She brought a key element to his life, peace. Howard loved to have fun, laugh, and make memories. Howard was caring and generous, had class and panache, was a great wingman, and was a real pal. He was always there for his friends when needed. Howard had a knack for ensuring the kind of service he desired, often utilizing what he called "the green ticket." He displayed great generosity towards organizations dedicated to assisting less fortunate members of society. The man was like a key master because he could open any door. There was never a "No" with Howard Cohen. Like a true genius, he could intuitively improvise his way through any situation. He possessed a unique ability to think beyond conventional boundaries. Howard enjoyed playing tennis and loved to swim. He was multifaceted, a master negotiator, a fascinating storyteller, and wasted no time getting things done. He was loved and appreciated, while also being feared and respected. Howard Gary Cohen was born in Manhattan, NY, on May 1, 1944. Shortly after his birth, his parents, Dorothy and Jack Cohen, moved to Miami Beach, FL, where Howard spent his formative years and developed his character. Howard received a baseball scholarship to play 3B at the University of Miami and would later play minor-league ball for the Philadelphia Phillies. He was #3 in your program but #1 in your heart. He was surrounded by some of the era's most powerful and influential people. As a child, he would dine at Jimmy Hoffa's house and sit on his lap. After years of proving his worth being streetwise, savvy, and an overall wise guy, Howard relocated to Las Vegas, NV. He began dealing Blackjack, but it wasn't long before he became an executive at Caesar's Palace. Howard had extensive knowledge of the gaming industry. He met high rollers from all over the world and utilized his great networking skills to engage in several side projects that led him to new and interesting places. Howard owned a racehorse named Boofa Shoes. He raced her at Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Los Alamitos, where she finished dead last in every race. During his pal Frank Sinatra's performance in Miami, Howard arranged for his mother and her friends to attend. Sinatra surprised them by singing a song directly to her booth, concluding with birthday wishes from Howard. Howard had a creative mind that ultimately led him to Hollywood, Howard was proudly signed by CAA, where he had instant success. Howard became an accomplished television Executive producer and maintained close relationships with cable and broadcast networks. In 2000, he sold the show "Chuck Zito's Street Justice" to the USA network. His next show, "Las Vegas Law," for Court TV, starring his friend and best man Bucky Buchanon. During this time, Howard founded Outside the Box Entertainment and co-founded iO Film, a feature film post-production company that was on the cutting edge of film digital color correcting and mastering. The company became the go-to facility for Hollywood's independent films. It cemented its reputation when the movie Crash, which iO Film mastered, won three Academy Awards, including for Best Picture and Best Editing. Soon after, Howard led the company to its new 26,000 square foot location in the heart of Hollywood, just off Sunset Boulevard. They contributed to other films such as Monster, Saved, Black Christmas, The Messengers, and The Celestine Prophecy, just to name a few. Through his work, Howard left an indelible mark on the industry, earning the respect and admiration of peers and audiences alike. After his Hollywood career concluded, Howard returned to Las Vegas, where he continued to be an active member of the community. He devoted the rest of his life to loving and supporting his wife, Dianna, ensuring she had everything she needed, personally and professionally. Howard took great pride in being a devoted husband, always being there for her. Sadly, Howard Cohen passed away the morning after their 34th anniversary, with his beloved wife by his side. <![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: Obituaries]]> (49)

GROVER LEWISGrover Lewis, a pioneering mathematician and key figure in the development of early computing, passed away on May 16, 2024, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Born in 1936 in Grady, Arkansas to Jesse and Mary Lewis, Grover journeyed from a one-room school in Grady to the forefront of early technological innovation. Grover grew up on his family's farm outside of Grady, Arkansas, and was baptized at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, which was located on the family property. (Later in life, Grover would donate land from his farm for the Church to erect a new building). Grover left Arkansas to attend high school in East Chicago, Illinois, and returned to Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1952 to attend Arkansas AM&N College. Grover was the first person in his family to attend college, and he pursued a career in mathematics. Grover was the Class Parliamentarian, the President of the Math Club, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, a member of the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, and Business Manager for the College Yearbook. After graduating from Arkansas AM&N, he enrolled at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where -- despite having to sit in the back of the class and being denied campus housing because of his race - - he earned his master's degree in mathematics in 1957, becoming the first African-American to earn a master's in mathematics from the University of Arkansas. Grover then took his keen intellect and embarked on a career where he would play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of modern computing. Following his master's, Grover joined the University of California's Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico. Grover was part of the team that worked on the initial programming for the first large computer developed by IBM (called "Stretch"). Grover's pioneering work in computing led to numerous advances in the field. Grover was also involved in early nuclear testing and was present for some of the harrowing above-ground atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. More pleasantly, his work would also take him to New York City, where he reconnected with former classmate Elsie Lavonne Hunter. The two were married on September 30, 1961, and had three children together. In 1965, Grover left Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and the family moved to Los Angeles, California, where Grover worked for Computer Sciences Corporation. CSC then won a contract from the Department of Energy to lead the selection of a new computer for the Department's Nevada Test Site operations. Grover was appointed as the Information Systems Manager, prompting a move to Las Vegas in 1968. Grover later joined the Department of Energy, and was the Director of Information Systems at the Department of Energy until his retirement in 2003. Grover was an avid sports fan, an excellent bowler, a skillful bridge player, and a tenacious tennis player. He loved listening to music (of all genres), dancing with Lavonne, and applying his analytical skills to investing. He leaves to mourn his passing his life partner, Elsie Lavonne Hunter Lewis, his children, Erica Lewis, Gordon Lewis (wife Kara Stuart Lewis), and Marianne Lewis, his grandchildren, Cassandra Lewis, Eleanor Lewis, and Grady Lewis, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service to honor Grover Lewis's life and legacy will be held at Palm Mortuary at 1325 N. Main Street, Las Vegas, Nevada on June 4, 2024. A viewing will be held at 12:00 p.m., the funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., and the burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in memory of Grover Lewis. Checks should be mailed to: Office of Alumni Affairs, 1200 North University Drive, Mail Slot 4929, Pine Bluff, AR 71601. Please make checks payable to Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund and include Grover Lewis on the memo line. For additional information, you may call the UAPB Office of Alumni Affairs at (870) 575-8499.
